Arthur Jacob (d. 1874) was the discoverer, when at Trinity College, Dublin, of the retinal layer containing light-sensitive rods and cones. Seen as one of the masters of medicine in Ireland, he also described basal cell cancer, which was long known as Jacob's ulcer. Lord Moynihan (d. 1936), `considered the most accomplished surgeon in England', was a pioneer of abdominal surgery whose long-term legacy includes various research organizations and the British Journal of Surgery. [From Dictionary of Bookplates of Irish Medical Doctors, by Edward A Martin MD—published by Edmund Burke, Dublin, 2003; ISBN 0-946130-39-0, Price €36]
