Ibery et al. have written an interesting paper looking at the pros and cons of the appellation Mister to describe the surgeon (April 2006 JRSM1). While I have no opinion either way on the matter, I do think their argument that the title helps distinguish physician from surgeon when they share a common surname is a rather weak one. Here in the antipodes we have found the use of Christian or first names solves such a problem quite easily.
